I told you about my experience at the medium-end steak restaurants and the cheap steak restaurants.
I saved the best for last.
If you come to Buenos Aires, you MUST splurge on a good steak. But the great thing is that a splurge here is nowhere near what a good steak dinner would cost you in the US.
La Cabrera
La Cabrera is one of the most popular high-end steak restaurants in Buenos Aires. You won’t find many locals, but tourists flock there.
I heard of La Cabrera my first week in Buenos Aires back in March when I met a couple in my hostel that chose this restaurant for their steak splurge in this city. It has continued to come up as the recommended place for steak in Palermo. In addition to excellent steak, it is known for its friendly, attentive service and the plethora of sides that come with your meal.
Since I have lived just a couple blocks from La Cabrera in two different apartments, I couldn’t leave this city without experiencing this restaurant.
The Meal
There were three of us. We ordered a provoleta and chorizo to start and then only one ojo de bife (ribeye) and one lomo de bife (filet mignon), knowing that we would also be getting a lot of side dishes.
The Provoleta
I was overwhelmed when all the food started coming out.
I could not take pictures fast enough. This place has awesome service and they know presentation.
The Sides
When I heard that there are good side dishes, I was expecting a big bowl of creamy mashed potatoes and a big bowl of properly-seasoned vegetables because that is about 30 times better than what you would get in any other restaurant in Buenos Aires.
Instead, we got a plethora of mini-side dishes. This photo shows only about 1/3 of them.
La Cabrera definitely won me over when I saw this dish of baked garlic.
The Steak
The steaks were huge. Even just ordering two steaks for three people was too much (although we did eat it all despite the pain).
The best part….
They were perfectly cooked!
Dessert
After this ginormous meal, we could not even look at a dessert menu. They brought us these tasty little chocolates and we got our choice of suckers. So no need to order dessert.
Cost
Splitting a bottle of wine (Las Moras Reserva is quite delicioso), two bottles of water, provoleta, chorizo, two ginormous steaks between three people, a billion side dishes, and three coffees, our meal cost US$52 per person including a well-deserved tip for our server.

Dry-aging means there is less moisture in the steak, which results in a meatier flavor.

Ok, This is on my list for December–my boys are big carnivores, even if I’m not. Will we need reservations? Any other hints?
PS–I’m starting to get excited to visit BA.

They have strange rules about reservations if I remember correctly. Something like only accepting reservations up until a certain time.
They open at 8pm for dinner. I suggest going on a week night and getting there right at 8pm, and you shouldn’t have any problems. Even if you have to wait a little bit, they give you champagne to sip until your table is ready.
If you go at lunch, it is cheaper.

I would definitely do at least one steak splurge while you are in BA. If you go at lunch, they have a lunch special that is cheaper, and I am sure still plenty of food.

I think I’m going to have to cook myself a steak tonight because this post is making me crave it again. It won’t be as good as La Cabrera, but it will still be quite tasty.

At $52.00 US per person, it’s still an expensive meal, but it looks and sounds well worth it.
I’d pay it, and probably would have taken leftovers home.

Definitely an expensive meal in Argentina. However, I know I’ve paid more than that for a nice steak dinner and wine in the US (and it wasn’t as good).
We SHOULD have taken leftovers home, but we couldn’t stop eating

Oh yea, been there and done that on the leftovers. Most of the time I keep eating too until it’s all gone!

La Cabrera is awesome. It has to be said that it is The Cuckoo of Buenos Aires The food looks awesome although I’m an Aussie which means my steak needs to be well done or a touch below it. Was your steak medium rare? I must admit I don’t each steak much so I don’t have any idea how well cooked a piece of meat is except that well done means thoroughly cooked.
Now that you mentioned that La Cabrera is in Palermo that leads me to ask you this: is Palermo a suburb of Buenos Aires? Or is it completely a separate city that like Geelong is to Melbourne, within commuting distance but a fair way away?
US $52 is worth about $54 AUD at the moment. That sort of money would buy you more than a decent meal with change at most Melbourne restaurants. At an upscale restaurant in Lygon Street, the restaurant precinct that I previously told you about, you could if you were with at least one or two other people, get steak, dessert and at least a glass of house wine for around that money.
That said it’s always beautiful to splurge once in a while for that “I’ll never forget” experience. This sounds like one for you.
Mine was in Sydney in 2006 when I climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge by doing the Bridge Climb. Here’s the web site for it: http://www.bridgeclimb.com/ . I did the Twilight Bridge Climb in April of 2006. The costs ain’t cheap at between $200 and $300 for the three and a half tour. But it’s one of those experiences that you’ll never ever forget. When I climbed I was at the front of the tour group and the tour leader gave me five minutes to myself on the bridge completely to myself just as the sun was going down over Sydney. It was absolutely stunning. If you travel to Sydney you have to do the Bridge Climb along with traveling to the top of Centrepoint Tower website here: http://www.sydneytowereye.com.au/ in the Sydney CBD and travel the iconic Manly Ferry to Manly and back from Circular Quay website here: http://www.sydneyferries.info/.

I’m extremely jealous right now. That is very smart of them to bring out a ton of samples of their side dishes. To me, that is the best way to enjoy a restaurant. I always want to order everything on the menu anyway.
