After the big excitement trekking on a glacier, our group hopped on an early bus to El Chalten.
I had heard so many wonderful things about El Chalten.
It is the most beautiful place in Argentina. It is the best place for trekking in South America.
There are magical unicorns and rainbows.
I started to believe it as soon as we got within sight of Monte Fitz Roy, which is the most famous of all the mountains surrounding El Chalten. There is quite often a cloud surrounding the summit.
No cloud today. It was picture perfect.
Our bus even pulled to the side of the road for us to get out and take some photos.
Once we got settled into our hotel and ate some lunch, we followed our guide David on a short hike to the Las Aguilas Mirador. We saw the tiny (but growing quickly) town and great views of the areas we would be trekking in the upcoming days.
Lago Viedma
Cerro Torre
We couldn’t have asked for a better welcome.
Bring on the trekking!

This post is part of a series about my experience on the Patagonian Trails Tour with Adventure Center. I was very impressed by their range of tour options from light to extreme adventure all over Latin America and the rest of the world. There really is something for everyone. Adventure Center handles all bookings with Peregrine for North American clients.

Speaking of adventure, what are the most enjoyable activities that a traveler can do there? I’ll take any of your suggestions. I’m sure it will be fun.

In El Chalten, it is all about the trekking. You can also do tours to the nearby glacier Viedma. I also enjoyed the restaurants in town. They were surprisingly good for such a small town!
In other parts of Patagonia, there are so many other activities. Kayaking, para-sailing, mountain-biking, boating, etc.

No, we got so lucky with weather. A few people in town said our first two days there were abnormally hot. We hiked in t-shirts/ tank tops most days but had to layer because of the wind. Summer can be nice in Patagonia, but you have to be prepared for bad weather.

Hi Stephanie, great photos! Let me tell you that Cerro Torre is considered one of the most difficult mountains to climb in the world. There’s a Herzog film called Scream of Stone with Donald Sutherland about that mountain. I love Patagonia, my place in the world. Well, that and Yosemite! Cheers!
Stephanie - The Travel Chica says
It certainly LOOKS difficult. It was hard just hiking up close to it
Thanks for sharing the info. Will add that movie to my queue for when I get back to the US and re-new my Netflix subscription.

In Bariloche, I met two people who were from Chalten and they told me how beautiful Chalten was (one of them was a cook and he goes up to Bariloche every year during the winter season because there’s not enough work in his field during winter in Chalten). Looking at your photos, I understand they were right.

I was chatting with the owner of my hostel (an Argentine who lives there with his wife and 3 kids full-time) about how cold it gets. it sounded awful, but they have the cold-weather gear and enjoy hiking when the tourists have left. I imagine it is difficult to get by with such a short tourist season though.
