I listed Franklin Park Conservatory as one of the 5 Must Do Things in Columbus.
I have visited several times, however, there is one thing I have never seen there: the Blooms & Butterflies annual exhibit.
For at least the past 5 summers, I have wanted to see this exhibit.
But I kept putting it off….
Until now.
Did I mention it is less than 5 miles from my house?
No more excuses. No more procrastinating.
I have been given a few weeks in my hometown over the Summer, and I would be foolish to let another year pass with this still lingering on my to-do list.
Butterflies
I went for the 1pm butterfly release.
I waited for what seemed like hours but was probably about 2 minutes for one of these guys to land. They were so fast, and the second they landed, they would close up their wings and hide the brilliant blue. I was finally rewarded for my patience.
While I was waiting for butterflies to land, I took some photos of the beautiful setting. You can see the massive Chihuly glass art in the background.
I loved this sign in the hallway when you exit the butterfly area.
The Art
There was also a fascinating photography exhibit in the gallery areas. In Hungry Planet: What the World Eats, photographers present images of families from around the world with the food they eat in a week.
This is a really thoughtful way to show the diversity in food culture.
A family from Mali.
A family from the US.
A family from Germany.
I loved how perfectly ordered everything is in the food setup.

Nice post! It’s too easy to always say “I’ll get to it” when it comes to doing something close to where you are living. It’s fun being a tourist in your own backyard!

What an amazing photo exhibit! I went to something similar once where the contents of people’s (most of them famous) trash for a week was on display…somehow I like the food exhibit better =)

Trash would be a good one if the people didn’t know it was being collected. You can find out a lot about a person from their trash.

I love the Hungry Planet photos too, particularily the amount of alcohol the German family is going through in a week.
Any idea how many butterflies they release at a time for the exhibit?

Unfortunately, I couldn’t hear the woman doing the presentation (a lot of people there). To be honest, it didn’t seem like there were that many because the area is so big. I was told there used to be more butterflies, and then there was an “unfortunate incident” that reduced the number considerably.

To answer your final question: Yes, all the time. But having kids has really helped me get out there in my own community. There’s nothing like a bored toddler to serve as motivation! Gorgeous photos.

So true. If you kept them in the house, you’d probably go crazy

It is amazing how it is the places closet to us that we always take for granted and will assume will be there for another. They are actually talking about selling Toronto Metro Zoo for this reason.
I’ve actually seen that art exhibit represented in a youtube video. It does indeed make us think, doesn’t it.

Cool that you’ve seen the art before.
So strange to think about selling a zoo in a major city.

Yes, I do put off visiting some of the wonderful places in my city but, like you, I am attempting to stop doing that!
I love your photography. (Oh, I found you via A View to A Thrill.)

Love your butterfly pictures anyway, I have been ‘doing that’ in my city over the last few years. I wish people would drop their ‘busy schedules’ nowadays.

That blue butterfly is gorgeous! Ever since our caterpillar/butterfly unit in second grade I’ve been quite enamored of the little creatures.

I had to be so patient to get the photo of the blue one. They would fly away so fast, and as soon as they landed, they would close their wings and hide the blue.

It wasn’t until I was moving from Canada that I finally visited my list of places that I kept putting off and most of them in the last month before I left. I love the Hungry Planet exhibition, what a great idea and the German photo with all the food lined up made me laugh.

Steph, I went to uni in a city called Edmonton that has one of the most famous water slides in all of Canada. I kept putting it off and after 5 years of living there I never did once ever go! I can totally relate to this post & the photos are stunning.

I’ve been saying ‘I should do that!’ about a lot of things here in the UK lately now that I’m getting ready to leave it. It all makes me kind of nostalgic.
Love the pictures of the butterflies. That place looks like a place we’ve got here called Plantasia where you go through three times of forest/terrain/jungle and walk through a huge butterfly enclosure at one point.
I love the photos of the families that are on in that exhibit.
