I know I just wrote that Buenos Aires has the best ice cream in the world only a couple months ago.
Well, I have to retract that statement.
Because I think the best ice cream in the world may actually be in my hometown of Columbus, Ohio.
I have always loved Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams.
And it was one of the things I was looking forward to about coming home.
Maybe it’s because I didn’t eat ice cream for 5 months before I arrived in Buenos Aires.
Maybe it’s because we think we need to go to exotic or fancy places to find THE BEST.
Why is Jeni’s better than the ice cream in Buenos Aires?
You can have as many samples as you want at Jeni’s.
They get a little stingy in Buenos Aires. I usually taste at least 3 flavors before I pick my cone at Jeni’s.
The flavor combinations are so creative and unexpected yet perfect.
Goat Cheese with Red Cherries
Sweet Corn with Black Raspberries
Wildberry Lavender
And the list goes on!
They do half-scoops, so you can get more flavors.
I can still tell myself it’s not that bad to have 2 or 3 flavors of ice cream because that is still only half the size of the 1/4 kilo you would have to order in Buenos Aires.
The ingredients are fresh and real.
You can check out their ingredients page and see that they actually put the real stuff in the ice cream, not just artificial flavoring.
My Favorites
My all-time favorites are Pistachio & Honey and Wildberry Lavender. But of course I had to take advantage of the free samples.
This time I tried the Coriander Raspberry and the Rock Mill Golden Ale & Apricots. These are both seasonal flavors, so be sure to try them while you can.
If you are visiting Columbus, Jeni’s is a must!
They keep expanding, so there are locations all over Columbus, even in the ‘burbs. You can find Jeni’s in grocery stores, as well as on the dessert menu at several local restaurants, but a trip to on of their shops is best for sampling. I also found out they just opened shops n Nashville too.
Jeni may soon take over the ice cream world… or maybe the ice cream United States.

I am intrigued by the uniqueness of those flavors. All of them sound delicious!
I am definitely guilty of taking for granted what is in my own backyard. But, I did recently go to the Lagunitas Brewery after subconciously avoiding it for years. Afterwards I felt sort of proud that this super cool establishment was in my home town.

Sure, but do they deliver?
I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but Goat Cheese and Red Cherries doesn’t sound like that great of an option to me.

They have a page online, but I think it’s more “shipping” rather than local delivery.
And yes, you are in the minority The goat cheese just makes it so creamy and rich.

I would never in a million years have thought to put goat cheese in ice cream! And I always feel bad asking for too many samples (I always limit to two), so it’s nice to know they’re flexible about that.

They’re not only flexible, they actually encourage you to try a lot of of flavors. Their staff are always very friendly and knowledgeable.

this summer I was given so many opinions about the best gelato in Florence or Rome – we tried quite a few, and we all came to the conclusion that the best gelato was whatever one we’d just had (w/in reason – not all gelato was that great, but among people’s favorites, yes!) I think it’s great how you’ve gone home with your new travel eyes and seeing things differently… I’ve chatted with @katyabroad about the same kind of thing lately.

If you go to the interior of argentina on one of yours travels you should check a small shop called “San Andres” inside the city of Rio Cuarto.
You would not find the traditionals flavours of icecream, you would find names like “X^2-2″,”no te conozco”, and many others (true to be told, a lot of others) with weirds names but truly good flavour. Each flavour is a suprise XD. (One thing, i do not now if they let have you samples, never asked for one…)
I go to that shop since i am litle, and i have gone to differents places on Bs As and Cordoba, but my choice will be still “San Andres”
The Travel Chica says
Don’t know if I’ll make it to that city, but I’ll this to my Argentina list just in case I’m nearby. Sounds like an ice cream shop I need to check out. Thanks for the suggestion!
