El Calafate is even more beautiful than I imaged.
The town is in the perfect setting on the border of Lago Argentino, which is fed by glacier meltwater.
I went down to the lake to capture the sun setting behind the town. Those shots are nice too, but I really like the pattern of the sand and that perfect “golden hour” color in this photo.
By the way, the sun sets after 10pm. It’s crazy down here!

Yet again you’ve chosen the perfect time and lighting for this photo. It doesn’t surprise me that the sun is setting after 10 at night El Calafate. Depending on how far south you may go in Argentina or Chile you may even find yourself in a place that still has sun at close to midnight such is the phenomena of summer sun and southern destinations intensifies. Also remember that you’re only a few weeks are the summer solstice of December 22.
This photo initially reminded me of Lake Eyre in Australia. It’s an inland lake in South Australia that is dry most of the time but once every few years fills up due to floods and makes the news headlines as the place comes to life with birdlife and beautiful flowers that you can only find in that part of the world. Here is the Wikipedia page for it if you’re interested in finding out more. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Eyre Unfortunately it doesn’t show any of the pictures of the lake when it’s full and in all it’s beauty which is a shame.

I have heard about that from people that went down to Ushuaia. They entered a club, and it was light outside. They exited the club, and it was light outside. It’s really messing with my sleep patterns!
Lake Eyre sounds like an interesting place.

The photo is gorgeous Stephanie. How long did it take you to put all those patterns in the sand?

“El Calafate is even more beautiful than I imaged” is exactly how I felt every single day I was there and why I didn’t want to leave. I was sure it was just an ugly little town that was there for the sake of tourism to the glaciers and that’s it. In reality, it’s really, really gorgoeous! If you haven’t been yet, check out the Glaciarium (the ice museum) in Calafate – I loved both the museum itself and the unbelievable, gorgroues, expansive view around it.

I do still believe it is an over-touristy and expensive town with not too much beyond the gorgeous views. But a gorgeous view can be enough for me for several days
I decided to skip the Glaciarium, but I did hear great things about it though.

I love this picture Stephanie. It is so dreary around here — I could use some of that sunshine. I’ll remind you that sunset around here is 5:37pm & sunrise 7:55 am. You are fortunate to be in such a cool, beautiful place this time of year. We had snow for a few days that covered the ground & finally got freezing temps & today it’s going to be in the 40s but with the windchill & rain this evening will feel like 30s. So most of the snow is melted with a few ice patches. When is the sunrise there? And when do you try to sleep?

That’s the benefit of being in the southern hemisphere now
I think the sunrises at 4am or some ungodly hour. I will never get a sunrise photo here.
Sleeping happens thanks to a glass of wine and my eye mask. But it’s hard to realize it is getting close to bedtime when it stays light out so late, so I am not getting the 8-9 hours I like.

No, I didn’t have the calafate beer. I had the homemade jam. I’m not one to like a fruit-flavored beer… but I did have a delicious Antares Kolsch in El Calafate.
