On the last day of my Patagonian Trails Tour, I got up early to have breakfast with and say farewell to the great group of Aussies I got to know over the last several days. Yep, that’s right. I was surrounded by Aussies again, and I had a great time.
- David, who joined the tour after a 20-day Antarctica cruise (yes, he did the polar plunge) was heading back to Australia to go on a vacation with his family.
- Peter, Robbie, and Kim were looking forward to the next legs of their long holiday in northern Argentina and Bolivia. They had booked a series of tours through Adventure Center’s the Australian partner company Peregrine.
- Barbara was at the end of her trip that also included Antarctica AND trekking Torres del Paine, booked through Peregrine as well.
Seriously, Aussies know how to travel.
When we stepped outside our hotel rooms, we were greeted with this view.
A wonderful parting gift from El Chalten.
It was so nice to take part in a tour with Adventure Center. For the first time during my year+ travel sabbatical, I did not have to worry about finding accommodations, figuring out transportation, preparing meals, and doing my own research to learn about the region.
Check out previous Argentina Fotos of the Week!

This post is part of a series about my experience on the Patagonian Trails Tour with Adventure Center. I was very impressed by their range of tour options from light to extreme adventure all over Latin America and the rest of the world. There really is something for everyone. Adventure Center handles all bookings with Peregrine for North American clients.

Meeting great people is, no doubt, a big part of the fun of traveling. It’s also fun to not have to worry about logistics for a while. The rainbow is beautiful Did you get to Ushuaia as well?

It really was a great time. I decided against Ushuaia because it is so far and I’m not doing Antarctica.

I almost did the same, and I ended up drooling over the boats that go to Antarctica instead (figuratively speaking, of course..). Ushuaia is really pretty, yet I’m sure you’ll see lots of beautiful places with or without it.

After 3.5 days of trekking, I was okay with a foreboding sky. I needed a rest!

I totally know what you mean about not having to worry about making reservations, etc. When I did the Fez Bus Tour in Turkey, it was amazing to not have to think about where to book, transportation, etc. Granted, the experience itself was crap, but not having that stress was fantastic! Beautiful photo!

Guess I got lucky with both not having to worry about the details AND having a great experience. Definitely going to look into more guided tours that fit my travel style and give me an enhanced experience I couldn’t get on my own.

Would you recommend booking a tour for Patagonia before you get there or just finding one on the ground?

Patagonia is a huge area, so that depends on where. If you want to do a multi-day trekking tour of El Chalten like I did, I would say it is best to book ahead. I did not see many tour companies when I got to El Chalten, so they might fill up quick…. especially during high season.
For El Calafate, it seemed like a tour to the Perito Moreno Glacier is hard to book on short notice during high season. At the hostel I stayed at my last night before I left for Chile, people were being told the next opening for a tour was 2 or 3 days out.
Puerto Madryn was different and seemed to have lots of tour companies doing the same day trips (although I got lucky and found a special tour to see the elephant seals up close and personal).

Beautiful rainbow. I remember seeing one a few years ago during a recess break in a ten day silent meditation retreat at a Vipassana center east of Melbourne at a place called Woori Yallock. I was at the end of the day just before dinner time. Looking to the west I could see a stunning sunset behind a mountain and I turned around and looking east I could see this stunning double rainbow. It all looked very auspicious to me at the time.
Now onto the subject of us Aussies. We definitely do know how to travel. It’s in our blood. The fact that our country is so big makes us excellent travellers by nature. You can drive for hours and hours and still be in the same state but the terrain and the sky and the people are completely different. If you live in one of the urban centres like Melbourne you can be a traveller just by going to a different part of the city and experiencing a different culture.
Stephanie - The Travel Chica says
I sort of feel like Americans should be that way too because out country is so large and diverse…. but it just didn’t work out the same way. I think there is something else about you Aussies
