I can appreciate tango music.
It is sensual and a bit edgy, but I also find it boring after a while, especially if there is no dancing to watch with it.
While I was in Buenos Aires researching the city guide, I met some travelers who told me they went to a “punk tango” music show,
I was intrigued. Plus, I miss going to live music shows. On my next trip back, I decided it was a top priority to see it.
Orquesta Tipica Fernandez Fierro
No, they do not bill themselves as “punk tango,” but I think that is a pretty good description. I would certainly call them avante-garde.
This orchestra has actually been playing for years, and they are very popular and well-known, and I believe they travel and perform internationally.
Who could possibly get bored watching these Argentine men with their long, unruly hair?
These guys know how to rock a bandoneón.
(That is the accordion-like instrument that Wikipedia taught me is not actually in the accordion family.)
The venue is the CAFF, a dark small no-frills music club in what may have once been a parking garage. Definitely the type of place you’d expect for alternative music performances.
I wish I had discovered the CAFF sooner because the other shows they were advertising look pretty fantastic too.
If you live in or are visiting Buenos Aires, check out the CAFF website and click on Calendario for the schedule of performances.
I totally forgot that I have the ability to take video on my camera, so I have included this YouTube video. It’s really cool and will give you a good idea of what I saw, so check it out. Take note of the awesome Argentine hair.
What do you think about this style of tango music? Would you go to a show?

The internet here in Yellowstone loads videos at a rate of about 1 minute per hour…but even though I’m skipping the video, I can still imagine how cool it would be to see someone rocking out some tango.

The real question is: CAN you tango? That’s one style of dancing I’ve never tempted, though I did love learning how to salsa in Cuba!

I cannot tango, but I did try. I went to group lessons for the first month or so I lived in BA. But it’s sooo hard, and you cannot learn when your partners doesn’t know how to lead. Private lessons were way out of my budget, so I gave it up.

Sounds very cool. While the music was fairly standard, we spent several nights at Tango Queer, an LGBT milonga. I would love to check this out.

Love the photos from this. Not what I usually think of when it comes to tango but the music and venue are pretty awesome! That was more like a rock concert but those lights hurt my eyes a little.

The funny thing about Buenos Aires is that most locals do not tango dance. Yes, you certainly have lots of milongas where you can see locals dancing, but it is nowhere near the majority.
But they DO appreciate the music, even if they don’t dance it.

PUNK tango?? That’s so freaking amazing. Kali and I actually do a lot of ballroom dancing (or did before we started traveling) and we’ve learned a bit of tango along the way. I can’t even imagine a punk version, though… 😛
