When I arrived, Francine jokingly asked me if I was ready to eat lobster every day.
I EXPECT to eat lobster every day.
I would like to eat lobster three times a day.
We didn’t quite get to that point, but there was definitely plenty of lobster (and lots of other fantastic fresh seafood that I will write about soon).
During lobster season, there are signs every advertising buyers and sellers of lobster. There are so many local, independent lobstermen operating in this area known as St. George. Because there was a glut of lobster at the beginning of the season this year, the price is really low. Good for people who like to eat lobster, but it has been tough on the lobstermen and this community.
It is my duty to eat as much of this excess supply as possible.
I ate my first whole lobster ever.
It looked great, but I had no clue how to get to the meat.
They handed me a rock.
My first attempt was tentative, and the shell barely cracked.
Then I decided to go all out.
Some lobster meat and juice splattered, but that’s what the bib is for.
Once the tail is cracked open, you can easily devein it by holding your thumb on top back end of the tail while pulling the meat out. This was a bit tricky, and I’m glad I had the coaching.
It came out perfectly!
Few things in life are better than fresh lobster.
Where to eat lobster
Of there are a million places. I ate this fresh lobster at Cod End, a family-run restaurant and store in Tenants Harbor. It comes with a nice view too.

How awesome to be in a place where it’s encouraged to eat lobster with your hands…reminds me of that scene in the movie, Splash

It’s great that lobster is such a casual dish in Maine… there isn’t much work that goes into making it taste great. It just naturally tastes that great if its fresh.

I’ve still never eaten a whole lobster; I think I’m still a little squeamish about all the mess. But you’re tempting me.

It’s really not that difficult if you have someone tell you how to do it. And it comes with a bib just in case

Yum…We’ve always eaten whole lobster, and my children were amazed that anyone DIDN’T know how to eat it (blue crabs, too). So glad you had the chance.

This would come in very handy here in the Galapagos if I could afford it! Too bad I’m limited to fried fish and dirty burgers!

Exactly! Paul was trying to explain to me that eating lobster gets old after a while (I don’t think he ate lobster the whole time I was there). I still can’t imagine that is possible.

Nice too see that you tried the lobster, I still have to try it. I don’t think I can unless after a few glasses of wine. What’s the yellow sauce you had with it?

It’s just melted butter. I only used a tiny bit. The lobster is so good, I didn’t want to mask the flavor with lots of butter.

Everywhere I went in this area, I was reminded that lobstering is one of the main ways people make a living. You see the cages and the buoys in yards everywhere as you drive along the coast.

In Nova Scotia we always get lobster when I`m home, although no local ever eats it in a restaurant unless it`s a lobster roll. It`s only 7-10 bucks a lobster if you buy from the dock and take it home. Really quite easy to cook too.
I have never used a rock but I must confess once I used a hammer.
