I’ve taken quite a few trips to cities around the US, however, I still have not decided on my next international trip. I want to return to South America to explore Peru one day soon. I am probably the only backpacker who spent over a year on the continent without hiking Machu Picchu.
Do you know why I didn’t fit it in at the very end of my trip when I was just next door in Bolivia? I didn’t want to do it alone.
I bring you this guest post from Steve Juba because it covers two things that interest me: 1) the beauty of Peru and 2) travel clubs for solo travelers.
PhotoFly Travel Club offers a new and unique way to travel the world with a group.
Forget those cookie-cutter bus tours with way too many tourists. You know, the ones that only stop at the most famous highlights and tourist traps in a given country. Steve Juba created this travel club because he saw the need for authentic, off the path travel experiences that are available for single travelers, solo travelers, and anyone who likes to explore the world with like minded wanderlusts but doesn’t want to go it alone. The travel group plans international adventures every month with a focus on small group travel (15 people max), unique cultural and off the path activities, and of course amazing opportunities for travel photography.
They’re heading to Peru next month. Check out some travel photos from their last adventure here!
Peru in Photos
Boy and His Llama
The traditional Peruvian dress is truly an art as you can see with the brilliant colors and weaving of this boy’s shirt and hat. The llama’s lookin pretty good too…
Bundle Up
We took this shot just after a traditional weaving demonstration in Cusco. The high elevation in the Peruvian Andes makes the air dry and temperatures cool during there mild winters. It can get quite cold at night as this girl bundles up before sundown.
Coca Cola
We love the colors of this roadside store.
Machu Picchu Sunrise
You can’t go to Peru without a trip to Machu Picchu. Our travel club spent a few days here hiking and admiring this remarkable 15th century Incan city in the mountains. Incredible photo is as simple as point and shoot.
Not Your Typical Pet
On the streets of Cusco you can find many children and their parents posing in traditional dress for tourists. We wish we could say this shot was taken in a remote village but it was in the heart of Cusco’s central square (Plaza de Armas). Shhh, don’t tell anyone.
Pig Anyone?
Street vendors in Lima aren’t shy about displaying their food.
What do you think: Appetizing or Not?
Pigeons
We took this picture in Lima’s Plaza de Armas. Tons of pigeons call the square home and enjoy perching atop the angel of the central fountain.
Titicaca Boat
We highly recommend making the trip down to Lake Titicaca in Puno. This huge lake is shared with Bolivia on one side and Peru on the other. Great pictures can be taken on a tour of the floating islands. These man made isles are made of the tatora reeds that grow in the shallows. They’re constantly falling apart from the bottom so the families that call these reed rafts home continuously add fresh ones to the top. They use the same reeds to make their boats seen here
Woman in the alley
The streets of Cusco are awesome. You can get lost (in a good way) wandering through the hilly cobblestone alleys and side roads. We love this photograph as the woman strolls past us and love her hat even more!

Loving these photos, Steph! Peru keeps popping up in my mind as a place to visit (although minus Machu Picchu..serious fear of heights) as it looks so diverse. Not sure I’d try one of those sandwiches/burgers sitting on top of the pigs, though…

I absolutely loved Cusco, especially the Quechua people and their get-up. The kids, I’ve got to say, have mastered the art of hustling at a very young age. We saw plenty of them with their colorful clothes, a baby llama in their hand, and asking people if they want to take a photo. They’d then quickly thrust their open palms in your face asking for that tip.

It is kind of disgusting how much Coca-Cola (the real stuff, not diet) that is consumed in Central and South America.

Great shots. We didn’t make it to Titicaca when we went to Peru and I was totally bummed. I know we’ll make it back one day and seeing your photo of that boat on the lake, makes me want to go sooner than later.

Even though I was in Bolivia, I didn’t make it to the Bolivian side, which I hear is nicer because it is less touristy. I definitely want to see both.

So many colors in these photos! The locals seem to be wearing rainbows And where there is color there is hope and joy. Nevertheless, my favorite is the forth photo – Machu Picchu – a black & white photo colored with history, culture and harmony – a Mecca for all history buffs and not only.
