As soon as I booked my flight to New York City, I reached out to Fran.
You may remember her as the New Yorker I met while living in Buenos Aires who invited me to visit her on the beautiful coast of Maine.
Fran has lived most of her life in New York City, and even though she lives in Maine now for semi-retirement, she visits “the city” frequently.
She still knows the city like a local.
She sent me a list of places to check out.
The first one on the list…
Momofuku
To quote Fran,
Have Pork Belly Steam Bun and Ramen. It’s all pork all the way down!
How could I NOT go?
Momofuku is one in a group of restaurants by David Chang, who is apparently a genius chef. The Noodle Bar is his first and Fran’s favorite. I went at an odd hour to avoid the crowds.
The guy sitting next to me at the bar had a bowl of pork ramen that was BIGGER than his head. There was no way I could eat that much on my own, so I just ordered the pork buns.
Sweet, savory, porky goodness.
I will go back (hungrier) to try out the pork ramen on my next trip.
I learned from Alana during my food tour in Chinatown that you shouldn’t pay more than $1 for a pork bun. I paid considerably more for these, but they were the best I’ve had (so far). I was at a trendy spot in the East Village, and you of course pay a premium for that.
Next time I will seek out the best $1 pork buns in NYC and see how they compare.

Looks like the chef is quite big… multiple places in NYC and in other big cities. I’ll try them all if I get the chance.

I am such a huge fan of anything pork belly!! Momofuku definitely has amazeballs pork buns! (Sorry but the $1 porkbuns don’t compare…) The Milk Bar, right across the street is their dessert bar and they have this thing called Crack Pie. I’ve been hooked for years! It’s literally crack in pie! Next time you’re back in NYC, you gotta try ramen at this place called IPPUDO. They also have similar pork buns as Momofuku’s, a little tooo similar if I should say so myself. It’s also downtown, on 4th Avenue bw 9th and 10th streets. The wait is usually always long but so totally worth it! I’ve stopped going to Momofuku’s ever since I had Ippudo’s ramen.

I haven’t seen the word amazeballs in a while And yes, I totally agree with the description. Good to know the cheap ones aren’t as good.
A friend told me about Milk Bar too, although I was not aware of something called crack pie. At least if I’m just visiting, it can’t become an addiction.

I used to get dollar pork buns in Boston’s Chinatown. These look more qualitative though. Luv the cucumber effect…
