I hate bugs. Perhaps that is because they love me.
Mosquitoes eat me alive no matter how much poisonous Deet I put on my body or clothes. I lived in constant fear of getting bed bugs, since they seemed to be all the rage while I was traveling. Cockroaches are simply disgusting, and I feel lucky to have had only two icky experiences with them during my travels in the tropical parts of Central America. Have you seen the movie Brokedown Palace? If you have, you will know what scene haunted my dreams every time I even heard of someone else spotting a cockroach.
When I was in Ecuador and Bolivia, I met lots of travelers who had gone into the Amazon. Even the locals told me I had to go.
No, thank you.
Ginormous bugs, especially ones I do not recognize, freak me out. I might have been willing to “tough it” a few days, but as a solo traveler, I had nobody else pushing me to do it.
But there is a type of bug that does not scare me.
In fact, I smiled every time I saw one and tried to take as many photos as possible.
Bolivia is teeming with Volkswagen Beetles.
I am not sure why, but their quantity was noticeable in every city I visited. The bugs of Bolivia come in a variety of colors, and their owners take care of them.
While looking through my photos to pick the best to hang on my walls, I realized there are lots of great photos I never shared on my site. I will do a couple of posts a month highlighting the NEVER BEFORE SEEN PHOTOS (sounds exciting, I know) from my Latin American adventures.

Unfortunately there are not many beetles left in Europe, despite the manufacturer, VW, being German. I’m sure my parents have seen a lot of them in their youth thou!

Cute post! I love that Bugs are so popular in Bolivia – that seems so random. It has always been one of my favourite types of car – they’re just so quirky looking.

I didn’t notice them in bordering countries, so I’m not sure why there are so many. But they’re fun to see

Ha, ha–I love this post! I wasn’t sure what was coming and then, the ‘beetles’! Funny!
Great photos, by the way.
I’m also a bit freaked by bugs. I’ve been to the jungle. You should hear them at night! Like a chorus, but sort of creepy…
Stephanie - The Travel Chica says
Well, you just helped ensure I will never go to the jungle

I met a woman in Indonesia who went to see orangutans in a jungle and stayed in an allegedly decent place. When she went to bed, she started noticing some large ants and other insects on her pillow. Turns out they were dropping from the ceiling or something. She ended up staying out on the porch the entire night!
I got sick and never made it to that place. Know what? I didn’t feel that bad, either!

Love these bugs. I’ve had a fondness for beetles ever since my brother got one way back when. I’d actually like to have one of the new ones. Anyway, enjoyed your photos of bugs in Bolivia. Fun post.

Well spotted. Cool little cars, these. I had one once, a gold-coloured one. A car with many nicknames (boble, or bubble, here in Scandinavia). Wonder what it might be called in Bolivia…

I had a 1974 Superbeetle when I was in college and OH MAN do I miss it – even though it would rust inside when it would rain and ruin clothes, shake violently from 45-65, and smell like gas.

Definitely believe that which you stated. Your favorite justification
appeared to be on the net the easiest thing to be
aware of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed while people consider worries that they plainly don’t know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top as well as defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people can take a signal. Will likely be back to get more. Thanks
