If you read this site regularly, you know that I do not do a lot of product reviews. There are two reasons for this:
1. I want to keep the content relevant to all of you
AND
2. I have a bit of a problem with the consumer culture and don’t believe in buying things I don’t need or really, really want.
When BassBuds approached me about reviewing their product BassBoomz, the timing was perfect. My home entertainment system had recently stopped working, and this was a dilemma for me. I love listening to music and watching movies at home but find laptop speakers to be rather pathetic when it comes to enjoying music and didn’t want to spend the money to purchase yet one more thing for my home. (Remember, I am a bit of a minimalist.)
What are BassBoomz?
BassBoomz are portable speakers that pack incredible sound quality into a tiny package. You really do get an impressive amount of bass with a rich, clear sound when you have it sitting on a hard flat surface and twist to expand the diaphragm.
These wireless speakers are compatible with any Bluetooth-enabled device and also come with an auxiliary cable for compatibility with non-Bluetooth devices. Because it is small and durable and has a rechargeable battery that lasts several hours, it is also perfect for travel.
I have already used my BassBoomz a lot at home (my neighbor loves me) and have tested it on a recent 9-day trip. They have earned a precious spot in my backpack for all trips going forward.
This product passes my checklist for buying something new.
- Do I need it or really, really want it? Although one could argue whether or not I NEED good quality sound for music and movies at home and while traveling, I definitely really, really WANT it.
- Am I going to use it a lot? Yes! And I already have.
- Is it a quality product? So far it has lived up to my expectations. According to the company, you get a 12-month warranty for refunds and replacements in the unlikely event that the product fails. There is also a money back guarantee if you send an email within 7 days of receiving the item.
- Is the price reasonable? At 50 euro (about US$70), I find BassBoomz to be worth the price, especially since the quality is good enough for me to use at home and not only travel. They ship worldwide with a reasonable shipping cost.
If you are a music-loving, movie-loving minimalist, BassBoomz may be for you.
As I write this post, I am using my BassBoomz to listen to an old Weezer album and will use it again tonight to watch the latest episode of Dexter. I can’t wait to take it on my upcoming trip to Nicaragua.

Fun fact: You can actually amplify the sound of a smartphone by placing it in a bowl. It may or may not be better than a “real” speaker like one of these, but I’ve always felt that it makes for a good litmus test. “Is it better than a bowl?” should be the threshold for whether or not buying it is a good idea. I think some of the higher-end models accomplish that, but some of the really cheap ones probably don’t, so if you’re looking to spend $20 on a cheaper version of this, you’re probably better off grabbing a bowl out of the hostel common room or whatever.
