The landscapes of the Bolivian Altiplano are incredible and the highlight of this tour. The animals are great too! You don’t see a lot, but the ones you do see are special (at least for a girl from Ohio). 8 Favorite Animal Photos These were the first animals we spotted. All three of them walked […]
12 Favorite Landscape Photos from Tupiza to Uyuni
I delayed publishing these photos because I spent countless hours downloading, sorting, editing, and uploading the 1000+ photos I took. I exercised a lot of restraint with the shutter, but I still had that many photos from four days. Then I had to figure out how I wanted to present them and narrow down the […]
6 Tips for Surviving the Four Day Tour to the Salar de Uyuni
I did it!
I survived four days in a Jeep with five strangers without a shower in the freezing Altiplano of Bolivia including:
extreme altitude,
no internet,
and minimal access to electricity.
For someone like me who likes to run every morning, eat reasonably healthy, and have lots of me-time, a tour like this is a little frightening. But it is totally worth it to see some of the most beautiful landscapes in South America, and I will be sharing my photos starting next week.
But first, let’s get practical.
3 Reasons Horseback Riding is Over-Rated
I am the only person I know who doesn’t get excited by the thought of riding a horse in a beautiful, exotic place. 3 Reasons Horseback Riding is Over-Rated It hurts! Maybe my ass is not properly designed to sit in a saddle. All I know, is it hurts. It hurts the whole time. I […]
Foto of the Week from … Tarija: Street Food
At first I thought this was just cheese on a stick. As much as I love cheese, there are more interesting things to try. Then the man told me it was NOT just cheese on a stick. This is cheese and YUCA on a stick. When I was in Nicaragua, I discovered yuca for the […]

(If this is news to you, and you want to be in-the-know sooner, sign up here.) Back in 2010 when I finally decided to start telling people about my travel sabbatical plans, many asked […]
Foto of the Week from … Rosillas: The Ugliest Dog in South America
If you are named after the hideous creature Gollum from The Lord of the Rings, you are probably not very cute. However, this Gollum is so ugly that he is sort of cute. Perro Andino This is a perro andino (Andean dog). I had never heard of nor seen this type of dog before. […]
Ambrosia: The Tarijeño Breakfast of Champions
On the morning we started the Valle de Los Cóndores hike, Vicente introduced us to the traditional breakfast drink of the Tarijeños (people of Tarija). Ambrosia When he grabbed the bottle of Singani, a locally-produced liquor that tastes like rubbing alcohol and paint thinner, I was worried and already thinking of excuses to not try […]
Foto of the Week from … The Top of a Mountain: Condors Playing
The condors don’t come out until it warms up a bit. After a day of hiking in Valle de Los Cóndores, it was nice to be able to sleep in. Around 930am, we started hiking to a higher spot to position ourselves for what we hoped would be a spectacular condor show. The condors did […]
The Best Kept Secret in Bolivia
As I said before, there are a few things to do and see in Tarija, but I decided to stay longer than the usual visitor. I wanted to go mountain biking, but nobody else signed up for the tour. I wanted to do a wine tour in Valle La Concepcion, but nobody else signed up […]
